8 Myanmar newspapers to go daily

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Information has announced that eight journals have been granted temporary permission to publish private daily newspapers in Myanmar from April 1.

Seventeen publishing groups have applied for the daily newspaper licenses since February 1. The newspapers granted permission are: Khit Moe, Union Daily, Shwe Naging Ngan Thit (The Golden New Country), Emperor, The Messenger, Mizzima, Myanmar Newsweek and Nout Sone Nay Sin Htote Thadinsar.

“Other applicants can still apply before April 1 as long as they complete all of the required information,” said the Ministry of Information spokesperson.

Private daily newspapers have been banned in Myanmar since 1964.

A draft media law was announced a few days before publishers were informed whether or not they had been granted the daily publishing permit.
