Earthquake risks probed in three Burmese cities
An “Earthquake Risk Assessment for Three Cities” was launched on December 20 in Naypyitaw by the Burmese government in collaboration with United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

It says the program will assess seismic hazards and related risks for the three cities located in the most seismic zones— Pegu, Taungoo and Sagaing—which are all situated along the Sagaing fault-line.
“Cities and urban centers in the past along the Sagaing fault experienced major earthquakes and those cities have undergone substantial changes over the years,” said Bijay Karmacharya, UN-Habitat’s Head of Agency and Country Program Manager. “With the market-oriented economy, it will further undergo rapid transformation. The risk assessment project will facilitate development of long-term action plan for vulnerability reduction of three cities and will also lead to building national capacities to undertake such assessment in other cities which are equally prone to earthquakes.”
Following the launch, experts presented various lessons learned from recent earthquakes. Experts also discussed the framework for undertaking risk assessment in the three cities.
On December 22, just two days after the launch of the program, an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted Sagaing Division. No injuries or deaths were reported.
