Rangoon prepares to take the high road
Rangoon authorities will begin to tackle the city’s mounting traffic problems by constructing a series of overpasses in congested areas, according to state media.

An inauguration ceremony for the Shwegondaing Overpass in Bahan Township was held on December 12. The Shwegondaing Junction project will be jointly implemented by Yangon City Development Committee and Capital Development Co Ltd. The overpass was designed by JFE Co of Japan, said the report.
While construction takes place, road shoulders are being expanded and underground water pipelines, power lines and communication cables moved.
Shwegondaing Overpass will be built o f reinforced concrete, The New Light of Myanmar said, adding that the expected time for completion is about 11 months.
Hledan Overpass, Bayintnaung Overpass and Shwegondaing Overpass are currently under construction in the former capital, but YCDC plans to build more and more overpasses at other junctions in the city, the report said.
