Unlimited airlines permitted between Burma and South Korea
Burma and South Korea will soon permit an unlimited number of carriers to operate between the two countries, overturning a bilateral agreement set in 2006 that only allowed for two airlines from each nation.
According to an official from Burma’s Department of Civil Aviation, the agreement was made at a meeting between Burmese and South Korean officials in Seoul during the third week of December.
He said no timeframe for implementation had yet been set.
“In previous years, not many businesspersons were interested in flying between South Korea and Burma,” said textiles businessman Htay Oo. “But now market demand is increasing and many people want to invest and provide services [in both countries].
“We usually use sea routes to send clothes to Korea, but air travel is much quicker,” he said. “The transportation charges for air freight are quite high, so if they permit an unlimited number of carriers, we hope the prices will go down.”
